Period type ?The time span this calculation covers.
Monthly — rates are annualized ×12.
Quarterly — annualized ×4.
Annual — used as-is.

Benchmarks — user defined

Internal target rate (%) Primary ?Your board-approved threshold. All health indicators (green/amber/red) are measured against this. Appears in the audit trail as an organizational policy declaration.

External reference (%) Optional ?A secondary reference you've sourced yourself — e.g. from Mercer, SHRM, or a regional HR body. Shown as a reference line only. This tool makes no claim about its accuracy.

Headcount & exits

Opening HC ?Headcount at the start of the period. Used with closing HC to calculate average headcount — the denominator in the attrition formula.

Closing HC ?Headcount at the end of the period. Combined with opening HC: Avg = (Opening + Closing) ÷ 2. SHRM-standard method.

Total separations ?All exits in the period — voluntary resignations, involuntary terminations, retirements, and any other departures. Numerator in the attrition formula.

Voluntary ?Exits initiated by the employee — resignations. The controllable, preventable portion of attrition.

Involuntary ?Exits initiated by the organization — terminations, redundancies. Should equal Total minus Voluntary exits.

Regrettable ?Exits the org wished it could prevent — high performers, key talent. A high regrettable rate signals a retention risk beyond the headline number.

Non-regrettable ?Exits that are acceptable or planned — poor performers, role eliminations, retirements. Still create vacancies but carry less retention risk signal.

New hires ?Total new joiners in the period. Used to calculate net headcount change and the hiring gap vs. what attrition requires.

Growth target HC ?Your desired closing headcount next period. Used in the Hiring Target tab to calculate how many people you need to recruit above backfilling exits.

Cost estimator

Avg. annual salary ($) ?Mean salary across the exiting employees. Used to estimate total cost of attrition: recruitment, productivity loss, and training investment.

Cost per hire factor ?Replacement cost as % of annual salary. SHRM estimates: 50% entry level to 200% executive. Covers agency fees, onboarding, lost productivity ramp-up.
