We often look at success as a finished product—a gleaming skyline, a stable economy, or a thriving community. But every metropolis was once a “mud flat swamp,” and every great achievement was once a gamble against the odds. Don’t you agree?

In studying the life and words of Lee Kuan Yew, the founding father of modern Singapore, we find a blueprint for personal and professional reinvention. Whether you are building a business, a career, or a community, these three pillars of “The Singapore Story” offer a timeless roadmap.

1. The Will to Govern: Finding the “Iron” Within

Leadership, whether of a nation or of one’s own life, requires a specific kind of internal constitution. As Lee famously noted, “Whoever governs Singapore must have that iron in him, or give it up” [23:07].

This “iron” isn’t about being unyielding; it’s about the resolve to make difficult decisions when the stakes are at their highest. It is the refusal to be “cowed” by circumstances. When Singapore was “booted out” of Malaysia, the easy path was despair. The harder path—the path of iron—was to take a “shooting stick” of 214 square miles and turn it into a powerhouse [08:04].

Watch the documentary you will know what the above sentence “shooting stick” means.

The Lesson: Success demands a Steely resolve. When the world tries to “squeeze the juice” out of you, be like the durian: tough on the outside, nutrient-dense on the inside, and impossible to ignore [10:14].

2. Calculated for Eternity: Perspective Over Popularity

In a world obsessed with the next “election cycle” or quarterly report, there is immense power in thinking long-term. Lee Kuan Yew’s strategy was never about the immediate win. He stated, “I am calculating not in terms of the next election… I’m calculating in terms of the Next Generation… in terms of Eternity” [08:35].

This perspective allowed a tiny island with no natural resources to move “from a mud flat swamp to a modern city” in a mere decade [09:07]. By prioritizing multiracialism and social cohesion over short-term tribal politics, he built a foundation that could withstand a thousand years [05:08].

The Lesson: Stop measuring your progress by today’s metrics. Ask yourself: What am I building that will matter in 50 years?

3. Follow the Rainbow

Perhaps the most enduring piece of advice for the “young and the not-so-old” is the invitation to pursue a vision with everything you have.

“Look at that Horizon, follow that rainbow, go ride it” [01:00].

Lee was a realist; he knew that the path of the pioneer is not always paved with gold. He warned that not everyone would strike it rich, but he promised something better: a “joyous and exhilarating ride” [46:19]. The profit is not just in the destination, but in the transformation that occurs when a person—or a nation—refuses to stay put and chooses to reinvent itself.

Final Thought

Years from now, where will you be? Will you be part of a “metropolis” of your own making?

The music hasn’t stopped, and the party isn’t over. As long as you have the courage to “drum up the music” and the discipline to follow through, the horizon is yours to claim. Go ride the rainbow.
